Winter Solstice and US

Y’all… it’s been fun putting up some posts and getting your comments about holiday traditions, shopping and baking (more to come, too), but I want to address something on a serious note. Today seems like a good day because it’s Winter Solstice. Today is the shortest day of sunlight and longest night of darkness; a rebirth of the sun. After posting about going through a divorce, I received a lot of private DMs. I did get back to some of you, but comments kept coming. I thought I would write to each of you right here.

First of all, I’m grateful you all are sharing. The holidays are so wonderfully chaotic for some, and for others can be brutally lonely and overwhelmingly emotional. I think what is the hardest for some of you (based on what I’m reading) is that this is not the holiday we THOUGHT we would have. The unmet expectations are translating as failure and disappointment in our minds. Although our feelings are valid, they are not always accurate. Feelings are not facts.

This note is for those of you that told me you find yourselves suddenly single parents this holiday. Being a single parent is never how we imagined life, but here we are. And we will be okay.

To the one that told me she didn’t know if she could survive this transition of divorce this Christmas, you will. I promise, you will. This season of heartache will pass. For all of us.

To the single mommies out there trying to scrape up money for Christmas, blessings to you.
Let’s not forget all our children really need is us. Our attention. Our love.

To those of you that are suffering health wise or have loved ones not well, let’s pray for strength and healing.

And to those of you that have opened up about missing loved ones, my heart aches for you.

For those of you that were hoping so deeply to have a child of your own this holiday, I understand.

To all of you that told me you are in a relationship you know you need to leave immediately, yet feel you cannot, I understand that, too.

flowers.JPG

I don’t have the answers. I do pray and talk to God. I’ve had to shift my perspective. I was holding on to “what could have been.” It’s best to let that go. Grieve what could have been, then focus on “what is” and focus on the next step to being YOUR best self and being the best mommy/daddy.  What can WE do today to make tomorrow better? I wrote about how cathartic workouts are for me and encourage you all to find the time. I 110% believe that and know that, but I’ve let life get in the way recently and it’s hard to stay on schedule right now. Let’s all just be gentle with ourselves today. On the darkest night of the year, the lights will shine the brightest. Tomorrow, the sun will surely come up. And it will stay out longer giving us a sense of renewal and regeneration.

As the saying goes, scars have the power to remind us that our past is real. Whether your relationship or situation gave you physical scars or emotional scars or (like me) both, remember that those scars are landmarks in time. And you will one day look at those scars, as I will too, and see how they have faded. You will see how far you’ve come.

I know it’s not comfortable to comment publicly on instagram, so DM is easier. I’m brainstorming on how to connect all of us in a way that feels safe and supportive. I love this blog, but it’s not one location … there are different blog posts where people comment and it’s not possible to read all the comments as a community at once.

Find the joy in life today if you can. My little boy is playing in his room with his Nana and Papa. My heart is full. For those hurting today, consider yourself hugged and this bouquet of flowers is for you. You are not alone. We can turn our tragedy into treasure together.

OH MY REINDEER! best cookie recipe ever!

Doing a quick spin off of the holiday traditions post because I’m getting so many responses for more baking ideas! LOL. I cannot take credit, though. SUPERNANA is here! And actually, SuperNana is learning from pinterest- which I just started going to more. She got some fun holiday ideas from them and created these adorable reindeer cookies. Hayden flipped!! He loved them so much. And I am obsessed with how good the brownie cookie is. OMGosh.

Posting the recipe below, but SuperNana made them all by herself! And in case you missed my stories- scroll down for the Reindeer Pancakes with Turkey Bacon! (Tip: to make the turkey bacon extra crispy like I like it, my mom said to bake it on a cookie sheet on top of foil. It works!)

HOLIDAY TRADITIONS starting with a cup o' cheer

Originally written Dec 2019. Some things have changed, and some are still a work in progress (I won’t weigh you down with all the personal stuff right now!). BUT SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE! LIKE the best traditions. PLEASE LEAVE FUN IDEAS, especially since we are now in lockdown again… our usual experiences are on hold.

IMG_5201.JPG

What are your holiday traditions? I’m hoping to share some ideas here and want to add ones you guys suggest, keeping this post up to date. Hayden and I have to stay here due to my situation with his dad, so my amazing parents are joining us in LA for Christmas. I want to make Christmas Eve and Day memorable. Would love ideas of your traditions. Since this post is older, i’m updating links today… bare with me if some things are not working or sold out, I’ll add alternatives asap.

In the meantime, I’m answering a burning Q right now from you all (lol):

WHAT DO YOU PUT IN THAT COFFEE OF YOURS? LOOKS SO DECADENT.

NEW MATCHING BEANIE SET (CAN MATCH WITH YOUR MINI-ME)

NEW MATCHING BEANIE SET (CAN MATCH WITH YOUR MINI-ME)

I love my coffee in the morning. Love it. If you follow my stories, you’ve seen what looks like a whole concoction. I get asked every time I do a story what it is exactly that I do to make my drink. I often just say “add hot cocoa and steamed milk” but that then garners more questions! It’s so silly and basic, but I’ll spill the beans anyway! (Pun intended). I do change it up a bit at times. When I had to leave my home quickly, many appliances went missing, so… I had to start again. (PLEASE NOTE, ONE CHANGE I MADE IN 2020 is to remove the hot chocolate on a daily basis and switch to steamed Oat milk!), but when I want something decadent for the holidays, keep reading.

Here is current routine:

IMG_5172.JPG
IMG_5174 2.JPG

Half a packet of hot chocolate mix (I get Nestle hot chocoalate with mini marshmallows) in large 12oz cup. Add 10oz of coffee (I do Keurig right now with light breakfast blend pods). Stir. Steam 1% or 2% milk (I am OBSESSED with this milk frother. I tried several and this is the one that makes it the way I prefer- lots of foam). Add the froth on top, stir again. If I’m making it more of a traditional holiday drink, I add a dollop of whip cream and a peppermint spoon. I know, I take this really seriously. Now, here is my order for Starbucks. This is in no way sponsored but you guys have asked what I order if I’m out. Since Starbucks is in so many places (even Thailand and Russia)!! I figured it’d be a good place to share my order. Venti non-fat MISTO with 3 pumps of mocha. If the barista doesn’t understand, tell them this: 3 pumps of mocha at bottom, 2/3 hot coffee, 1/3 steamed nonfat milk with extra foam.

While I’m here, sharing a few ideas for simple DIY holiday fun from my mom:

What my mom did for Hayden this morning making him Santa pancakes! Sooooo super fun. We saw the idea on pinterest (where I’m sure there are very elaborate ones, but I think my mom’s is pretty fab).

santa pancakes.JPG

GINGERBREAD HOUSE: Michael’s has little pre-built. We made a haunted ginger house at Halloween from a kit and I swore never building one from a kit again. It finally stayed together with a heft glue gun! This year, we got a larger one from World Market (HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS- GOING TODAY TO GET MORE) and two from Michael’s, along with small figurines for Hayden to create a village. We are loving it. World Market also has the fun candy that is different and whimsical looking…our Whoville Village;)

IMG_5199.JPG
IMG_5200.JPG

MAKE PAPER SNOWFLAKES for the kids’ rooms. I youtubed how to make a 6 point snowflake. My mom’s version came out better… but we all got to participate. Hayden is a tad young, but Huck is the perfect age, for a reference.

Mom reminded me of a few ways to make the HOUSE SMELL DIVINE.

Bake cinnamon sticks and cloves (order HERE on amazon) on foil on a baking sheet at 275.

Get those pinecones that smell like Christmas at the market and incorporate them in your tree.

Get a water bottle sprayer. Use mostly water, but add a few drops of peppermint oil or cinnamon oil. Spray the pinecones or your wreaths to keep them fresh and fragrent.

Ohhhh…. I’m adding one more idea that I remembered from my instagram community. Lisa Malnory (@lisa_mal805)! I LOVE this candy cane hors d’oeuvre idea! Totally copying you. Add red tomato to buffalo mozzarella and basil. Such a statement!

candy cane basil and cheese

And here are ideas for experiences:

Take a Ride on the Polar Express: If you are near a location, it’s a very fun way to kick off the holidays. We’ve been using our bell from Santa every day (except with that silly Elf hides it;) See my post below. Ideal ages around 3-7. Huck got to participate in the show for a bit, doing a small scene with the little boy and Santa. That was pretty special. Hayden loved the music and meeting Santa. We sat at the tables, but I hear the real seats are just as fun.

Disney On Ice: Again, if there is one near you, it’s worth going. Really spectacular show and talent. See my latest post on instagram here;)

Ok- your turn. Leave a comment with your ideas! I WANNA KNOW AND ADD to this post (giving you credit, of course)….!!

xoxo

I LOVE YOU SO MUCH

I love you-2.JPG

I LOVE YOU SO MUCH. I really do. Last night, as Hayden and I snuggled watching a show, I kept counting my many blessings. Each of you are on that list. Truly, there’s a community that’s developed here and I’m so grateful. I feel the support you give each other. That warms my heart when I see you all commenting to each other here and on social media. And of course, I feel the support you give me. Thank you. Thank you. I’ve written little thank you notes before…and my gratitude just keeps growing every day. When dark days have come and I’ve wanted to retreat, you guys pull me back out of my shell and keep me going.

I love you so.JPG

I wanna try to support some of you, too. Let’s do something fun here.

Today is Black Friday and I am all for a great deal so go get ‘em. It’s hard to beat the Amazon deals out there right now. But tomorrow is SHOP SMALL. Do you or someone you know have an Etsy shop, or an online store that we could all access? I want to encourage everyone to shop locally or shop small businesses tomorrow for SHOP SMALL DAY. Many of these business owners started out of necessity, passion or both. I love hearing the stories. It gives our purchases meaning.

Leave the web address in comments so we can all see and I plan on highlighting some! I would love nothing more than to support you and/or your friends!

6D4A0067.jpg

ps- just had to share something so sweet. My best girlfriends from high school and I try to do a girl’s trip as often as our schedules permit. We have almost done it every year.

This year, we picked Nashville and were so excited. But, life made a dramatic turn on me and I needed to be in LA or multiple reasons. I wanted them to go ahead and not be miss out because of my turn of events. But, they did not.

They all came to LA. And they came bearing gifts. I know, cue my tears. The shirt I’m wearing was one of gifts, which is similar to the wall mural in Austin, Texas, that we love. I’m telling you, my cup runneth over. (Get the shirt that matches the wall HERE— at an Ety store in the spirit of shop small!). And you’ll see a few more tomorrow.

Here’s to lifting each other up!!

BEANIE saves the (bad hair) day

Hi y’all.

It’s cold here for Southern California standards. I don’t feel well (clearly these photos were taken a couple of days ago). Hayden isn’t 100%. He’s staying home from school today just to be safe. I mean, this kid gets vitamins and eats so well. But it is just the nature of pre-school, I guess. And his friends have all been battling cold and flu season.

So, home from school, we’re trying to get in the holiday spirit over here. Doing a few things that make Hayden happy, like having hot chocolate with snowman marshmallows this morning, oatmeal and bananas. He is obsessed with marshmallows, so my mom sent these and he lives for them.

And I’m doing finishing touches my gift guide. Hoping it’ll be up by the end of the week. In the meantime, I do LOVE this scarf/beanie set I’m wearing in these shots. For under $40, it’s such as sweet gift. Comes packaged beautifully. The hat is soft… just a great buy. Also comes in black and white for your non-pink friends! I have many!! Beanies are just genius remedies for bad hair days! Or tired mama days.

And I was searching for a comfy, white sweater. I found a few, but really do like this one I’m wearing here. Got a medium for the oversized effect. For $39, it’s perfect and comes in several colors.

6D4A4869.jpg

And I just found pink (I AM a pink person!) rain boots that I might splurge on for myself. It’s suppose to rain a lot the next few weeks. These Hunter boots are pretty amazing.

And one Black Friday sale going on that I’m eyeing: Gap is 50% off of everything if you have a gap card, 40% off for the rest of us. Off of everything! EEP! Here is my current cart:

6D4A4852.jpg
ashley jones beanie.JPG

I have to share this: Hayden woke up verrrrry early this morning immediately asking how Santa was going to find him. I said, well, he knows where you live. He said, “But we don’t have a fireplace. He won’t be able to come down the chimney.” It’s true, our new space doesn’t have a fireplace. I assured him I would get up in the middle of the night and let him in.

That seemed to suffice for a bit. Then he said, “I have a great idea. Just amazon a fireplace, mommy! They will deliver it. And can you have them bring a tree, too!” AHHHH. If only… Ha. Actually, Alexa, can you do….;)

Hope y’all are having a HEALTHY pre-thanksgiving day.

xoxo

SUPERWOMAN, SUPER SECURE

I feel like SUPERWOMAN… thank you to Lorex Technology for sponsoring the post today and allowing my DIY-superwoman abilities to come out. You guys… you can feel this vibe, too! I really try to bring you all ideas and products that I like and am personally using. When I work with brands, this often comes organically because I’m already a fan of the company and it gets communicated to them. Today is no different.

lorex 11.jpg
Lorex 10.jpg

If you are a regular here to the blog, you know a few months ago, Hayden and I moved into a new home. Remember the boxes??!! UGHH. My highest priority was safety. Creating an emotionally and physically safe environment for my little man to flourish was imperative. Some of you have been reading between the lines and sending positive messages of support and strength. I feel so covered and know I’ve done my best so far to protect our space. I can be on guard, alert and aware to an extent, but in order for me to fully relax in our new space, I wanted security cameras.

Were I am in my life as a newly single mother, security cameras are a household staple. Much like a tv or sound system or having Alexa has become accepted “necessities” in our homes, we should all have some level of safety and protection for our families.

I know I could have hired someone to come in and install a system, but what I’m learning after starting over on my own— I’m a whole lot more capable than I thought I was! With that said, I was still intimidated. I honestly looked and looked, then would just “save” items in my cart. I thought I needed to ask other people’s advice or just double check with “someone.” I wasn’t even sure if that person was my dad, or brother, or friends. I just wasn’t trusting myself, I guess.

electric-drill-ashley-jones

I took it one step at a time. I made a list of what I wanted:

  1. the ability to see real time on my phone remotely anywhere in the world

  2. indoor/outdoor capabilities

  3. completely wireless/no cables or plug ins

  4. easy installation

  5. no monthly subscription fees

  6. HD recording

  7. two way voice talk

  8. affordable

Since this is not my forever home, I wanted to be able to easily take the cameras with me to the next location. If I’m investing in a system, I want it to be a cutting edge technology that won’t be outdated in a few years. I want the guarantee that these cameras will last. I encourage you to your own research. After scouring the internet and reading review after review, it became apparent you get what you pay for. People keep saying Lorex is worth the money. I decided to just do it- got the 1080p Wire Free Cameras, battery packed outdoor/indoor.

When it arrived, I didn’t think I could install it by myself. I was letting the parts intimidate me. I let my insecurities tell me I needed help from someone that was technical and “better at this stuff.”

But my inner superwoman came through louder reminding me the reviews said it was easy to install. Surely I could do it! RIGHT? I pulled out the instructions, got an electric drill and figured it out. I feel so accomplished!!

6D4A4771.jpg
lorex 9 2.jpg
6D4A4784.jpg

I want every person and family to feel protected - so I am writing this for ALL the people of the world, but I want to take a minute for you single ladies, mamas, and sisters out there. Protect your property, your family and yourself! You don’t need to wait on someone else to come and do all of this for you. Invest in yourself! Not just literally, but emotionally. Even if you don’t apply this to security cameras, apply to whatever issue du jour. If something intimidates you and you’re stalling because you think you need someone smarter or more technically advanced to do it or because it may require a drill. (Like I used to think). Let’s stop that thinking.

You are CAPABLE. And so am I.

Have you been thinking about securing your home? Or vacation home? or just wanting a more permanent, reliable system? Right now, there’s an early Black Friday sale. 25% off site wide at Lorex. Seize the moment and make it happen. Every time I leave my home, I’m grateful I did. Do you already own cameras you trust?

SWEATERS UNDER $50 AND EASY ENTERTAINING PREP with CHEESE BOARDS

SO, TELL ME… have all y’all picked out what you’re wearing to the living room this Thanksgiving? lol. Y'all… Holiday fun is here! Tonight we’re going on a train ride to meet Santa. Hayden is beside himself. I’m determined to make this a memorable holiday for him. I’m slightly confused if I should put away the pumpkins yet, but I’m holding out and letting thanksgiving have it’s moment! I’m still loving the fall color scheme, but I’m writing this from Starbucks this morning and it’s like PSL who? It’s all Xmas! (For those of you that might be wondering, PSL is pumpkin spiced latte. lol). There’s still time for quick holiday prep. Especially online with 2 day shipping;)

6D4A4826.jpg

I recently asked what topics you wanted to see on the blog on my social. I was pleasantly surprised to read you missed the “fashion/clothing” posts. I did, too! So, I’m back sharing some of my favorite finds! All the sweaters in today’s post are UNDER $50 and free shipping (main reason I love Nordstrom). The sweater I’m wearing in these shots is my top Thanksgiving pick for lunch/dinner. I love the style, love the colors and love the price! It’s fully stocked in sizes today, but as you know, these items so fast.

thanksgiving sweater.jpg

I’m having a few friends over before we head to the Polar Express ride tonight. Gonna try to step up the hors d’oeuvre and charcuterie boards. I did a practice one yesterday for a few people over for a photo shoot. By the time we took theses shots, it was a bit picked over. There’s definitely an art form to maintaining the classic cheese board look and keeping it full and neat. This 3-tiered ladder board elevates the whole concept, though. I really just threw together stuff I had in the fridge and pantry. I love the rustic, yet clean feel. Are you guys good at making these fancy boards? Tag me in your posts so I can get some inspiration. In the meantime, I added some pinterest type tips below. Hopefully, my next hosting post will be more enticing. But, my point is that these boards make it work regardless of what you have on hand or your how artistic you are!

collapsed image

Best part is it collapses for easy storage. I got it at PicnicTime.com. I’m warning you…you’ll want quite a few things for yourself and for gifts. Especially because they are giving 20% off and free shipping. Use code JONES20 if you need to, but I think they offer this often:)

DAYDATE WITH THE KID

I never thought I’d cry writing a blog about Dr. Seuss. But I here I am! crying after writing this little poem:

Here I am! Adult and able, crying about a so called fable.

A poem or two that touched me so, pierced my heart, but helped me go

Go further than I thought I should, be stronger than I thought I could.

I’m hiking that mountain you said I would climb, my feet are aching but the view is sublime.

I’m watching my step with great care and great tact, I’ll make it to the top, it’s simply a fact.

That balancing act you mentioned to me, I’m seeing what truth you gave for free.

No, oh no, my eyes are not shut, Bright lights I see, it’s more than just luck.

Paving the way for little boy, I am. Living his best life, with an upside down frown.

Mommy-Son- Subway.JPG

Okay… so, I’m a fan of the books and their DEEP meaning for such simple phrases.

It was a joy to go to the premier and see the first two episodes of Green Eggs and Ham. Such an fun twist on the classic story. I’d say it’s for kids Hayden’s age or older… any younger might get a little scared.

IMG_3693.jpg

If you saw my instagram post today, I’m teaming up with Shamrock Farms on their collaboration with Subway and Netflix, but lemme tell you why I wanted to work with them. I sincerely appreciate experiences and events that incorporate Hayden. It’s mainly just us right now. Stories (as he call them) that we can both watch and actually enjoy together. (read: I ENJOY watching, too) are a plus. As a lifelong fan of Dr. Suess, I appreciate his humor and deeper meaning now more than I ever did as a child. Ah, the beauty of real classics.

Kudos to Subway and Shamrock Farms for joining in on the fun. For limited time, for just about $5, you can go get a Fresh Fit for Kids Meal: REAL GREEN EGGS and Ham sandwich, a side and a carton of protein…the milk, and chips or cookie or apple sauce. And if it’s a full out party night, Hayden splurges for the chocolate milk. It still has the same 9 essential nutrients, including Vitamin D and potassium, as well as the protein as the regular white milk. Shamrock Farms’ milk has no added sugars or growth hormones like rBST. Folks, not all milk is created equal, so, look for their signature green top. For more info:

Take advantage of these brands coming together to make your own “event” special and have one on one time with your child or family. Subway, Shamrock Farms milk and Netflix the night away! I was gonna say Netflix and chill, but someone told me that has a different connotation;)

I wish Huck had been with us. He’d get such a kick out of the green eggs at Subway and the characters on the milk cartons. They are literally green eggs!!! A fun conversation piece for the kids.

Does this make anyone else nostalgic?

GOOD MORNING, GOOD NEWS

HAPPY MONDAY MORNING!

Some of you have become regulars here on the blog or visiting social. Thank you! If you find out some good news, will you share it with everyone here? We need to hear it! I need to hear it!

When we get scared, anxious and feel alone, filling our minds with something positive can inspire us to take another step and keep going.

Sunrise

Sunrise

Did you or a loved one get a good report back health-wise? Did you get a promotion? Clean out a closet and now feel more space in your brain? lol (Sometimes WE CAN CREATE OUR OWN GOOD VIBES doing something proactive).  Be of service to someone? Simply have a good cup of coffee?? Positivity spreads. When we can be happy for each other, that spirit is contagious. I’ve been so happy for friends recently that booked jobs or celebrated their wedding anniversary. Even if I’m sad and scared about my situation, it doesn’t take away from me being HAPPY FOR THEM. It’s not always easy to understand why some things work out for us and some things don’t. We just have to hold on to the belief that THERE IS ENOUGH SUNSHINE FOR EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US.

I was walking yesterday with Hayden and saw some bare trees. Skinny, naked and grey. So important what the seasons teach us. Those are the same trees that will have stunning, full pink blossoms next year. Last week, my girlfriend Willa Ford reminded me to thank God for good news coming. Have faith it’s coming.

That was Monday morning. And I did add that to my prayer. Late Friday, I got some good news. I booked a job!  Since y’all are such amazing supporters, I am excited to share with you. It’s an episode of a primetime show I hope you’ll like.

I’ll be able to say more later, but for now, it’s great to hear something positive on the work front. I feel blessed and want to hold on to that. Now go— your turn. Let’s keep the cycle going. Share some positive news!

ps- working on some fun posts for here, too. Some cozy, holiday inspired posts! And really cool wellness ones, too. Stay tuned. Now, off to workout and get some serotonin flowing.

EDIT: SINCE WRITING THIS VERY EARLY THIS MORNING, OUR CITY IS BASICALLY ON FIRE. NOW MY PRAYER IS NO ONE GETS HURT AND THE FIRE GETS CONTAINED AND THE LAFD FEELS THE LOVE WE ALL HAVE FOR THEM.

TRANSFORMATION COMES AT A COST

ashley-jones-workout.JPG

As I was struggling to “go up the hill” in spin class this week at peak resistance, the instructor said something that struck me. TRANSFORMATION COMES AT A HIGH COST. She said that THREE times. And at one point, when I was about to just STOP, it was like she heard my inner voice and said, DO NOT GIVE UP BEFORE THE MIRACLE HAPPENS. You are almost at the top of the mountain. You are almost THERE. Don’t stop now. What is it that you NEED? What is it that you are PROTECTING? What are you SAVING? It’s up there at the top. GO GET IT.

The thing about transforming ourselves is this: something has to go. You leave part of your “old life” behind. There’s no way around this.

Now, none of this is new information. We’ve all read the inspiring memes a thousand times. But timing is everything, as they say. I am going through an uphill battle right now that doesn’t seem to have an end in sight most days. It’s financially and emotionally exhausting. But TRANSFORMATION COMES AT A HIGH COST. I am making some of the biggest changes of my life. As my preacher Rick Warren reminds us often, focus on the PURPOSE, not the problem. If I focus on the problem and the pain and my “old life,” it seems insurmountable. I feel punched in the gut. Small. Defeated and angry. The anxiety and fear that develops is debilitating, paralyzing and draining. If I focus on the purpose, that pain turns to productive power. And I have energy to pursue the new life I believe God has planned.

And as all this was happening in my head with sweat beating down me, I felt this cathartic rush of emotion. Like I was going to cry in spin class. Ha! Just when I couldn’t push the pedal any longer, the resistance weakened and we were going “downhill.” We reached the peak, caught our breath and we were moving forward at a fast pace.

workout-wednesday.JPG

Not to make this more profound than it is, but IS KINDA IS! Such a metaphor for God pushing us to our full potential in life. TRANSFORMATION COMES AT A HIGH COST. I’m learning more and more about you all every time I post and you comment. Some of you are dealing with infertility, or being a new mother, or paying off debt, dealing with major health issues, losing loved ones, moving, marriage issues…. Whatever your uphill battle is today that’s taking away your power and feels debilitating, focus on the purpose one pedal push at a time. Stay focused on ONE TASK at a time. And know you are not alone.

Would love to hear your thoughts- as always- in comments below. Tonight I have set aside time to go through comments on the last few posts!

ps- workout buddies that push you and hold you accountable are the best! Thank you @iamwillaford.

Verses and quotes I love that relate to this topic. Hope they inspire!

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV)

RALPH WALDO EMERSON:

“Write it on your heart

that every day is the best day in the year.

He is rich who owns the day, and no one owns the day

who allows it to be invaded with fret and anxiety.

Finish every day and be done with it.

You have done what you could.

Some blunders and absurdities, no doubt crept in.

Forget them as soon as you can, tomorrow is a new day;

begin it well and serenely, with too high a spirit

to be cumbered with your old nonsense.

This new day is too dear,

with its hopes and invitations,

to waste a moment on the yesterdays.”

ps- thank you, Mary, for reminding me of this one.

MONDAY MAKEUP...QUICK AND AFFORDABLE BASICS

ashley-jones-affordable-makeup.jpg
drugstrore-makeup-ashley-jones.jpg

I get a lot of questions about my makeup routine. I’ve never done a tutorial cause I don’t feel like I’m an expert in the field!

But, one question I get over and over? Foundation!!

How much are YOU spending on foundation? Sometimes the prices are jaw dropping. And they don’t need to be.

makeup:drugstore:blog.jpg

I’ve often use expensive ones and I like trying new ones (I talked about it here in THIS POST). Over the years, I know the ones that work well for HD cameras under certain light. Soap opera lighting verses natural light outside, or indoor lighting on a nighttime set— or regular life!- they all could use slightly different coverage.

But today, I’m sharing a drugstore version that I use a lot lately.

This is a BASIC, FAST Everyday look. Perfect for anyone, but really helpful for a busy mama;) I’ve gotten my routine down to about 6-8 minutes!

DRUGSTORE FINDS

FOUNDATION: Burt’s Bees CC Cream is so affordable, buildable works well in different light. It gives a dewy look and covers well and has sunscreen.  I put it on clean skin with a brush. I let it sit for a minute, then go back in and dab it on areas I need more help, like under the eyes or on blemishes.

EYELINER: Loreal Infalliable. Been a part of my mix of liners for years. Sometimes with a new one, I have to break it in, so to speak. Warm it up so it’s not so stiff.

MASCARA: I get asked about this a lot. People ask if they are my real lashes. Yes. I just put a lot of mascara on! Loreal Voluminous Mascara works. I also talk about it in this post.

BRONZER: I love Loreal’s overall bronzer for contouring and shading and an added glow.

LIPS: Revlon Ultra HD Lip Mousse Hyper Matte. I got it from Jamie Greenberg, celebrity artist- she does Kaley Cuoco’s face. This stuff stays on forever. I add lip balm on top and blot it so it kinda looks “natural.” I’m liking Dusty Rose and Death Valley. Funny names but nice colors.

DRUGSTORE HAIR PRODUCTS:

HAIRSPRAY: A little bit of Elnette does wonders.

SHINE: John Freida Shine Spray

NON-DRUGSTORE GO-TOS:

BROWS: Anastasia Palette I literally create an arch that is not there with this palette, but ANY darker powder will work with the right brush.

BLUSH: Benefit Palette I like a pop of color on my cheeks. I think it makes me feel more youthful. (Notice I said FEEL, not necessarily look younger. And feeling it is half the battle!)

Very curious if you decide to try a drugstore foundation! Lemme know if you think there’s a huge difference in the expensive brands or not??… I do like to change things up often, so lemme know you’re favorites, pretty please! Whatever you are loving NOW. Also, would y’all be interested in more video type stuff on here, too? Not necessarily a tutorial, but something more video oriented?? LMK!

CALLING PET LOVERS

oscar and mommy.jpg

I need your help! Calling all dog lover/condo/apartment dwellers!

While Hayden and I were in transition and finding our new place, Oscar has been at “camp.” We are all back and reunited. Oscar has barely left my feet (only to cuddle with my mom or play with Hayden).

My dilemma? If you saw my story this morning, I was out walking Oscar before Hayden woke up. That works cause my mom is here, but I need a place for Oscar to go to the bathroom when my mom is not here. At night after Hayden goes to bed and first thing in morning. I have a patio with a drain, so I’m wondering if any of you have turned that into an area for your pet before?

I’m doing some research (like one of these here on amazon), but it dawned on me that the best thing to do is get recommendations from YOU. Looking forward to your thoughts if you’ve ever been in my shoes!!

HAPPY WEDNESDAY. I’m on my way to go workout…. trying to keep my promise to myself.

oh and ps- this photo was taken a few months back, so yes, I blurred my wedding ring for those of you that might ask. Not sure if that is silly?

How to get Happy with God given gifts

ashley-jones-workout

I just got home from a workout and am feeling inspired, so I thought I’d put my fingers to the keys. I promised myself next time I felt motivated to share something with y’all, I’d just write it out as soon as I could.

It’s no secret my world is changing. ICYMI you can see a bit of it here and here, etc. I’ve let worry and fear seep into my being lately. I believe in prayer. I believe that God doesn’t want us to worry. And I don’t want to, either. But I am human. Only human. And right now, life has been depleting me.

I ran on adrenaline for so long to get me through a few significant phases. But the “phases” are still coming. Court dates, hearings, money, lawyers, etc. I AM WORRIED, EXHAUSTED AND DEPLETED. My adrenaline is waining. Some of you have commented on my posts. It’s ok. It makes sense.

My girlfriends Kaley, Bri, Ali and Willa have been encouraging me to sculpt out time to workout. And I did. Then I would feel guilty. I have so much to do right now, it felt selfish. But, last weekend, I was with Willa and she really saw it. She saw the depletion. So, she reminded me of something:

God gave us a gift with endorphins. Working our bodies (and minds) to the point of releasing our endorphins is a GIFT. Better than medicine. If you are healthy enough to get out and walk or move or spin or sculpt, DO IT. I know not everyone is, so that in and of itself is a gift. 20 minutes can change your day! I love this article experiment reported in SELF magazine:

All she knows is that she's overwhelmed. So at lunch, she heads to the gym and hops onto the elliptical. As her heart begins to pound, levels of the feel-good neurochemicals serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine rise in her body. So does brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a substance that may protect her brain from emotional disorders and repair damage that stress and depression cause. At the same time, opiate-like endorphins and endocannabinoids (similar to the other kind of cannabis) flood her system, leading to a sense of well-being. Read full article here.

For years, I’ve been an advocate of healthy habits: drinking water, working out (even if it meant jumping jacks and squats in my bedroom), sweating out the bad and putting in the good with your vitamins and supplements. But lately, I let life get the best of me. And Willa reminded me that God gives us ways to be proactive! Keep our minds sharp and our bodies flexible and give us energy. I need energy.

Today was everything for me. I poured out sweat and felt like I left the bad parts of me on my yoga mat. And my God given natural endorphins replaced the old with new energy.

I hope YOU are in an amazing spot in life already (then encourage us with a comment!), but if you are more in my shoes than you’d like to admit…. let’s encourage each other to do what we can. If it’s a walk or run, or yoga—— goooooo! Do it outside for freeeeee. If all you can do today is stand up and stretch…do it. Even for 20 minutes and get happy.

Please. Do it. You will feel better. You will FILL UP. And God can use you for your purpose.

LIFE CHANGES, so why not UPGRADE

kelley-blue-book-ashley-jones

Today’s post is sponsored by Kelley Blue Book®, but you guys know for certain these thoughts came straight from my heart!

It’s Oct. 1st! Last month was my birthday! Do birthdays make you reflect on life goals? How you got to this point in your life…are you where you want to be?  If you’re close to my age, don’t you feel like our 40s are the time to start really settling in to who we are- unapologetically? Start to enjoy a few things you’ve worked so hard for?!

If you’re younger, get a head start… If you’re older, there’s no time like the present.

I am in the midst of some major transitions in life. Starting over again. But this time, not from scratch, from experience. I didn’t quite realize it at the time, but I made some great choices this past year that are helping this transition today. Funny how the puzzle of life starts to make sense with time. Little snapshots of my life popped up as I was in traffic recently. I had an overwhelming sense of gratitude. We are the sum of all our experiences. The peaks and the valleys made us who we are RIGHT NOW. And who I am today is a strong woman and mother to the most precious child! Here’s a snapshot of those puzzle pieces, broken down to six concepts:

ashley-jones-purge-party.jpg
6D4A7918.jpg

1) LET GO OF STUFF. For those of you on social media, you can see I’m still doing that!! It feels so good to be lighter. All the priceless stuff I took to a public storage unit, which gave me solace. Other stuff: you’ve heard it before and I’ll say it again, when in doubt, throw it out. (Donate the worthy stuff, of course). It certainly helped my recent move that I let some stuff go, but I’m working on paring down even more. Also, when you imagine your pieces/furniture/extra dishes/clothes getting a second life, it makes it more joyful to let it go. Find a women’s shelter and know you will be helping out someone very deserving. Fill up a box and take it to your car so it’s ready next time you are driving by. I’ve found a treasure of new beauty products that I think I’m gonna box up and give to one of you! Pay it forward! Leave a comment letting me know you’re interested (and make sure I have a way of contacting you via email or social media handles!).

2) UPGRADE AN ASPECT OF YOUR LIFE. This was a big one and you all were a part of it. I upgraded my car!! I’m so happy I have a reliable car for Hayden and me now. I live in LA and a car is like a second home. What I didn’t share with you at the time was I how I sold my old one with the help of Kelley Blue Book®. I cannot recommend this more. It takes a few minutes online… and you get a Kelley Blue Book Instant Cash Offer. Literally a few minutes with my VIN number. I then took my car in to the local participating dealer in Burbank for a review. It was fast (Hayden and I hung out while they reviewed it). I had time to think about it, but I didn’t need much. I took the Instant Cash Offer and got my check!!  I was a bit confused because I thought it should have been harder! lol. Pro Tip (cause, you know, I’m a pro now…ha!)… communicate with the people at your dealership when you go to redeem your Instant Cash Offer. I explained I had just put new tires on the car, and my cash offer got quite a bit higher!

6D4A7967.jpg

3) DO THE THING THAT YOU HAVE FEARED. Be it big or small. Wanna do stand up comedy? Sing in a band? Start a new business? I didn’t realize that starting this blog a few years ago would have ever been so beneficial. I didn’t think anyone would ever care to visit or read what I had to say! I was honestly scared of failure. But, I have formed a bond with you all and it has been a huge support to me. And it may even be a way for me to help provide for Hayden when I’m not filming. I’m so grateful I just DID IT. I didn’t know HOW. I researched and asked questions of others who have gone before me. And here I am again in life, taking one baby step in front of the other yet again. Somedays, I don’t move at all, but fall. And that is ok. As long as I get back up. That saying, “everything you want is on the other side of FEAR”… well, it’s true. Next up for me: DIRECTING!! WOO-HOO.

4) FREEZE TIME. This is a complicated one, but I’m just going to say it. If you are approaching 40 and have the desire to have a family but don’t yet (I’ve been there and still have that desire to have another one), there are steps you can take with modern medicine. DO IT. I wish I had frozen my eggs in my 30s. This is really a whole other post, but I couldn’t leave out the one thing I wish I had done before I hit 40. If you wanna read a bit more on my journey with this, check out this post here, or here.

5) SERVE OTHERS. Find a way to give back and serve. There are so many ways to do it now…. monetarily sponsor a child, mentor a child or teen, volunteer at your church or local schools or hospitals. I have found one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself is to give to others. At my most depleted, lowest times when I have no energy and deflated spirit, the BEST thing I can do for myself is help someone else. It renews the soul. It is the highest form of self care when done thoughtfully.

6) PLAN AHEAD. I’ve written posts in the past about financial planning. That research I did and knowledge I’ve gained will come in handy as I’m forging ahead. I look back and think how fortuitous it was that I worked on a financial campaign. But, now it makes sense. I need to heed all the advice I wrote in that blog!! Be smart about your finances. Enjoy life WHILE you are saving.

Ok… that was about all the stuff that popped in my head during traffic yesterday… You know what I would LOVE to hear about from you? What is the one thing you are so PROUD of yourself for doing/making/etc that has helped you out? Think about it and let me know. I bet that list would really benefit each of us! I’ll be reading every comment.

xoxo

GOLDEN GIRLS THEME

I did some instagram stories recently saying how grateful I was for my friends that have rallied around me when I needed it. I don’t have family here in California, so my friends really are part of my family. And I talked directly to YOU. Many of you have DMd quotes and prayers and showed your unconditional support.

When some of my Bold and Beautiful family found out a super viewer and supporter of the show, Matt Hanvey, was in the hospital, ICU no doubt, we wanted to go support him. That supportive boost can help us stay motivated and energetic in times that could go a different direction. Kelly and Dom are amazing at spreading love around…

Matt and Katherine Kelly Lang. Yes, I wore Dr. Bridget’s lab coat! lol

Matt and Katherine Kelly Lang. Yes, I wore Dr. Bridget’s lab coat! lol

My point in writing this post? Please do not think this is a pat on our backs for something we did. It is not. A reminder how awesome it can feel for all of us to SHOW UP for someone else. And showing up can be via a little note, hug, text, call, prayer or something big like hanging curtains and unpacking boxes! lol Truly, so many people “filled my cup” that I was full enough to send some love and a hug to someone else that day. Not all days are like that for me right now. But the ones that are become much better days. And there in lies the cycle of love. One other point? A little reminder that Matt has a funny twitter feed and instagram meme if you are a fan of soaps! Show him some love! He also contributed HERE on the blog!! It’s been too long… Matt, you need to do another one so get well sooooooon! My favorite thing he said to me later: I can’t wait to get out of here and pay it forward! God Speed!!

Nothing new under the sun here. Just the golden rule about doing unto others…. we learned this in kindergarten and the Golden Girls theme song.

Has someone done something nice for you lately? Paid it forward and encouraged you to do the same? Want to hear cause these are the BEST kinds of stories for a soul boost.

ps- Hi Nathalie!! Matt’s sister is in town working ( and thank goodness can also be with him) and I ran into her yesterday! What are the odds??

Keep CALM. Eat Chocolate!

HI! UPDATE. IF YOU DIDN’T WIN THE GIVEAWAY BELOW, DON’T FRET. GOOD DAY CHOCOLATE IS GIVING US 25% OFF THE ENTIRE SITE FOR OCTOBER!! USE CODE ASHLEY25. XOXO

Hi you guys… Boy! So many changes happening. I feel like there are curve balls being thrown at me everyday. As I have said in other recent posts, I wanna keep as much continuity in our lives as possible. Being consistent in small daily habits yields big results in the long run. That I know is true whether you are making major life changes, or starting new diet habits.

good-day-chocolate-probiotics-ashley-jones-blog.jpg
good-day-chocolate-ashley-jones

Full disclosure, these photos were taken a bit ago. Hayden was starting pre-school and I was making sure he was getting a probiotic and multivitamin everyday. Being exposed to new germs at school and adjusting to a new schedule can throw a toddler off!

We all know that our bodies absorb the outside stress in our lives. Stress from simple things like traveling to major life changes like moving can affect our health. If you’re feeling like anything is “off” with your body, TRY A GREAT PROBIOTIC—- sometimes something that simple with a lot of water can help tremendously. I’m reminding myself of this as much as reminding you!

Hayden gets his yummy probiotic after dinner. It helps keep things regular and moving, if you know what I mean;) Plus, he thinks it’s dessert!

gooddaychocolate-ashley-jones.

And for me, a morsel at night helps sleep. The probiotic, turmeric, calm… I’m eating all the good chocolates. I mentioned in my instagram stories recently that you can grab all of their flavors at Whole Foods now!! I was so excited Good Day Chocolate was in Whole Foods. I had to do some stories right there with Huck and Hayden. You can also get them all on amazon.

This brand has been a part of our lives for a while. If you’re new to this blog, check the posts HERE and HERE and HERE. We are real fans. Today I get to share the love…. we’re doing a fun GIVEAWAY with GOOD DAY CHOCOLATES because we just love you all that much!! They are making a generous variety pack for one of you to try all the different products. Make sure you LIKE THIS POST here on instagram and leave a comment here on the blog. That’s it! You’ll be entered. I’m really loving these giveaways. It’s a fun way to connect with you guys and give a little something back. It gives me joy. Hope you are liking them, too!
